Your alarm, cameras and lights all run through one unlocked box
Anyone can open a standard meter box and flick the main switch. A VPI keyed lock means only you and your power company can. Supplied and fitted, from $295.
$295 fitted, or $365 if your box needs a new clasp. Melbourne's eastern and south-eastern suburbs and inner city, Victoria.

Safehaus is a local Melbourne business run by a former auditor. We publish our prices, fit what we sell, and tell you when a lock isn't the answer.
Why lock the meter box
The main switch is the weak point
Anyone can open an unlocked meter box and flick it. Alarm, cameras and lights go off in one go.
Nothing is locked out in an emergency
VPI keyed locks open with your key and the distributor's master key. Firefighters don't wait for keys; they cut or force a meter box if they need to isolate power, lock or no lock.
Fitted properly, once
A stainless steel clasp that won't rust out, a VPI lock fitted square to it, and the user key and registration card handed over. Often done with other security work on the same visit.
Why not just a $20 padlock?
A hardware-store padlock will stop a casual hand on the switch. The problem is everything after that.
| $20 padlock | VPI keyed lock | |
|---|---|---|
| Stops a casual hand on the switch | ✓ | ✓ |
| Power company can open it for reads, faults and meter work | ✗ | ✓ |
| Stays on after their visit | ✗ they remove it | ✓ |
| Spare keys ordered only through a locksmith with the security code, via the manufacturer | ✗ copied anywhere | ✓ |
| Fits a standard box with no clasp | ✗ needs a clasp anyway | ✓ stainless steel clasp fitted by us |
$295 is the lock the power company accepts, fitted properly, with a registered key. $20 is a lock that works until the first time they need in.

We confirm which price applies from your photo. Travel included within 25 km of Scoresby. Further out, a $45 travel charge applies and is shown on your quote. On homes built before 1990 we don't drill the meter board backing panel, as older panels may contain asbestos. We'll tell you on the day if that affects the fit.
A meter box lock stops someone switching your power off. It doesn't stop them cutting a cable from outside. If that's the risk at your place, we'll say so rather than sell you a lock.

Wanting to make my home in Glen Iris feel safer and needing to deter unwanted visitors in the middle of the night…
We had security cameras installed by a technician, also a new security door was fitted promptly and neatly. Will use this service again.
Quality work. Good value. Easy to deal with. Sent mocked up pictures of options prior - very helpful.

Questions people ask
Will the electricity company still be able to read the meter?
Yes. VPI keyed locks open with the distributor's master key as well as yours. That's why Victoria's electricity distributors approve them. In an emergency, firefighters cut or force a meter box if they need to isolate power, so the lock never gets in their way.
Can't I just put my own padlock on?
You can, and it will stop a casual hand on the switch. But your distributor needs access for reads, faults and meter work, and a padlock they can't open gets removed. A VPI lock opens with their master key and yours, so it stays on.
What if I lose the key?
The lock comes with a registration card carrying its unique code. Spare keys can only be ordered through a locksmith, who uses that code to order them from the manufacturer, from about $50 a key. Keep the card somewhere safe and separate from the key.
Can't a thief just cut the lock off?
With the right tool, any lock can be cut. The question is who carries one. In a University of North Carolina Charlotte survey of 422 convicted burglars (2012), the tools they reported were screwdrivers, crowbars and hammers, not bolt cutters, and 41% said the break-in was spur of the moment. The lock is there to stop the person already at your house who sees an easy switch.
Does it work on any meter box?
Metal and timber boxes, yes. Plastic boxes aren't suitable, as the clasp needs a solid fixing. Send a photo and we'll confirm before you book.
Can you do other things while you're there?
Yes. Door and window locks, anti-climb spikes and a free 15-minute doorstep security check can all be done on the same visit.
Managing properties?
Send a work order with the address and a photo of the box. We fit meter box locks across a rent roll at the same price, hand the key and registration card to your office or the renter as you direct, invoice the owner, and send photos back for the file.
