Where it gets fitted
The fence someone climbs is almost never the front one. It’s the boundary nobody watches.
Rear fence onto a laneway
Nobody’s watching the laneway side. A 1.8m paling fence is a step, and the courtyard behind it has a sliding door.
Fences backing onto reserves, rail or car parks
Public land on one side means anyone can stand there. A topper makes the fence the end of the walk, not the start of one.
Side gates
The gap above a side gate is the easiest way into most Melbourne backyards. Toppers close it without changing the gate.
Shared and strata boundaries
Fence lines between complexes and rear boundaries on common property, invoiced to the owners corporation.
Low walls and parapets
Brick and block walls a person can get a leg over — front-mount version, fixed to the face.
Yards and small commercial

The hardware
Heavy-duty laser-cut Australian steel, screw-fixed rather than glued, and fitted to a height standard so it deters without creating a hazard.

Pointed anti-climb hardware is fitted only where it sits at least 2 metres above accessible ground, measured from both sides of a boundary, and never on surfaces a person must touch or lean on in normal use. Where a location can’t meet that standard we say so and quote an alternative. It’s what keeps the product a deterrent rather than a liability.

The steel is about $20 a metre online. You’d need a ladder rated for it, an angle grinder, cold-galv for the cut ends, a Saturday, and to get the height rule right — because a spike fitted where a neighbour’s kid can reach it is your problem, not the shop’s.

Questions we get on the phone
Can I put spikes on my own back fence in Victoria?
Yes, with conditions. They must be plainly visible, fitted where they can’t be reached from a footpath, road or neighbouring property below 2 metres, and signed. On a dividing fence the neighbour’s side counts too — which is why we measure from both sides. A topper that takes the fence over 2 metres generally needs a building permit.
Do I need to ask the neighbour?
On a shared dividing fence, it’s courteous and usually wise, and on some fences the Fences Act gives them a say. We fit from your side and never on a surface the neighbour touches or leans on. If the fence backs onto public land — a laneway, reserve or car park — there’s no neighbour to ask, which is exactly the fence that needs it.
Is it legal to fit spikes on a commercial fence in Victoria?
Yes, with conditions. The hardware must be plainly visible, fitted where it can’t be reached from a footpath, road or neighbouring property below 2 metres, and signed. Fence height limits and permits still apply — a topper that takes a fence over 2 metres generally needs a building permit, which is the owner’s responsibility. We fit to a written standard that keeps you inside all of that.
Do you need to see the site first?
Usually not. Two photos and a rough length get you a same-day price for most fence lines. Over 10 metres, or where there are gates, corners and mixed fence types, we walk it with you first — no charge. The quote is fixed either way.
What’s the smallest job you’ll do?
One 1.2m section at $195 — the gap above a side gate, say. The first section carries the visit; every section after it is $95, which is why most people do the whole run while we’re there. A typical laneway fence of 12 metres comes to $1,050.
What’s the difference between galvanised and colour-matched?
Same steel, same fixing. Raw galvanised is the industrial silver finish, suited to laneway and yard fences. Colour-matched is Dulux powder-coated in the standard Colorbond range — Black, White, Monument, Woodland Grey, Jasper, Classic Cream, Paperbark — so it disappears into a street-facing fence. It adds $25 per 1.2m section.
Can you invoice the owners corporation or the agency?
Yes. Quote issued to the entity that’ll pay, purchase order numbers on the invoice, 30-day terms for account customers. Jobs over $2,000 are confirmed with a 50% deposit.
Will it stop someone determined?
No product will, and we won’t tell you otherwise. It removes the easy route over a fence, which is the one most opportunistic entries use, and it’s what an insurer usually wants to see. If your site has a targeted problem, that’s a police conversation and we’ll say so.
